FAQs

  • What is the difference between ASHA, SHAV, AAA & the BASLP?

The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) is the national professional organization and credentialing association for (a) audiologists; (b) speech-language pathologists; (c) speech, language, and hearing scientists; (d) speech-language pathology and audiology assistants; and (e) students. ASHA provides national clinical certification for what is commonly referred to as the “Cs” (i.e. CCC-SLP, CCC-A, & C-SLPA). More information can be found here: www.asha.org

The Speech-Language Hearing Association of Virginia (SHAV) is the state chapter affiliated with ASHA. The chapter does not receive any monetary compensation from ASHA; however, SHAV does apply for grants when appropriate and utilizes ASHA’s resources for technical assistance with our shared mission and vision.  SHAV does not provide certification or licensure. More information can be found here: www.shav.org

The American Academy of Audiology (AAA) is a professional organization of Audiologists who provide continuing education, research, and increased public awareness of hearing and hearing disorders. More information can be found here: www.audiology.org

The Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (VA BASLP) is the licensing board that regulates audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and school speech-language pathologists in Virginia. In order to practice in Virginia, you must hold a state license. More information can be found here: www.dhp.virginia.gov/Boards/ASLP

  • What is the difference between an SLP and an SLP-Assistant?

SLPs and SLP-As differ in their educational background, clinical training, scope of practice, as well as their licensure, certification, and continuing education requirements. SLPs provide therapy services independently. A SLPA cannot be hired without an SLP as a supervisor. SLPAs are not trained for independent practice. They supplement the services of a licensed SLP.

  • What are the continuing education requirements for licensure vs. certification for audiologists and speech-language pathologists in Virginia? Does CE get reported to SHAV?

No, CE does not get reported to SHAV and is not a requirement for membership. However, SHAV is an ASHA and AAA CE provider for some of our events. The number of CE hours earned is located on our website on the events page. Additionally, CE hours earned can be submitted to the VA Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology to meet their CE requirements.
