President

Erin S. Clinard, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, CHSE


Erin has been a speech-language pathologist for 20 years and has worked across the lifespan in a variety of settings including Level 1 trauma centers, Level IV NICUs, outpatient clinics, private practice, public schools, and the university clinic. While she has diverse clinical experience, her primary area of clinical specialty is in pediatric feeding and swallowing focused on neurodevelopmental services in the neonatal intensive care unit and early intervention. Erin currently serves as an Assistant Professor and the Coordinator of the Online MS SLP program at James Madison University. She researches and presents in the areas of interprofessional education/practice, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and clinical education. She also dedicates knowledge and expertise as a certified healthcare simulation educator by serving as the Director of Research and Publications on the Virginia State Simulation Alliance (VASSA) board of directors.

Ed Bice, M.Ed. CCC-SLP


Ed Bice, M.Ed. CCC-SLP, is a Clinical Consultant for IOPI Medical and works clinically at a nonprofit speech and hearing clinic. He has experience in various settings and has held various leadership positions, including a Regional Manager, Vice President of Clinical Services, and Chief Operating Officer.  He is the co-coordinator of the Speech and Hearing Association of Virginia’s Feeding and Swallowing Disorders group and President-elect of the association. He co-authored Adult Dysphagia: Clinical Reasoning and Decision-Making Guide (Plural Publishing). Ed has served as an expert witness in court cases related to swallowing and swallowing disorders and has been an invited speaker for universities, state, national, and international conventions on various topics in dysphagia.

Alison R. King, Ph.D, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT


Alison earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Disorders from Appalachian State University, her Master of Speech-Language Pathology from the University of South Carolina, and her Ph.D. in Education with a Concentration in Special Education and Disability Policy from VCU. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings including private practice, early intervention, schools, and served on the cochlear implant team at VCU. Alison began supervising students early in her career and loves guiding new clinicians! She currently is an Assistant Professor in the CSD program at Longwood University. She firmly believes in giving back to the profession and has done so by serving on the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology as well as the Virginia Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Advisory Board. In her free time, Alison is an avid reader, concert-goer, gardener, and is addicted to the Crime Junkie podcast!

Vice President for Member Services

Erin Wallace, PhD, MS, CCC-SLP


Erin Stehle Wallace is an Assistant Professor at Longwood University in Communication Sciences and Disorders. In 2020, she received her doctoral degree in Special Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. Before completing her doctorate, Erin worked as a speech-language pathologist in a variety of settings including public and private elementary and high schools, private clinics, an audiology clinic, school for children with autism, and home-based therapy. Her passion lies in early childhood and elementary age youth with language delay and disorder. Erin’s research interests include the use of language-supportive strategies and their association with child language outcomes, children and youth with language delay and challenging behaviors, and collaboration amongst speech-language pathologists and educators. Erin resides in Richmond, Virginia with her partner and two sons. She enjoys running, spending time outside, and soaking up her boys’ fleeting childhood.

Vice President for Governmental and Professional Affairs

Melanie-Joy H Dorn MA CCC-SLP, RYT-200 


Melanie Dorn has practiced as a clinical Speech Language Pathologist working with adults with neurological communication disorders since 1991. After many years as an adjunct professor and presenting at state conventions she landed her dream job in 2016 as an Assistant Professor at The George Washington University. At GWU she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses throughout the year (Foundations of Human Communication, Voice and Diction, Anatomy of Speech and Hearing and Neural Substrates) advises undergraduates within the SLHS Department and is the faculty advisor for GWUs National Student Speech, Language and Hearing Association.


Melanie became a certified LSVT/LOUD® Clinician in 2010, completed her 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) training through Yoga Fit in 2012 and competed HLVYM® Vocal Yoga Instructor training in 2016.   She began the Yoga for All Abilities classes at The Stroke Comeback Center in 2013. Through Vocal Yoga HLVYM® she can combine her passions of voice and yoga through the common denominator, the breath. 

She is the only Vocal Yoga teacher teaching a Vocal Yoga class specifically for people with voice disorders including people with Parkinson’s Disease.  Melanie serves on The Stroke Comeback Center’s Board of Directors and Professional Advisory Board. When she is not on her mountain bike or teaching yoga, she enjoys presenting and conducting research focused on group therapy for people with Parkinson’s Disease.

Vice President for Audiology

Andrew Nash, Au. D., CCC-A


Andrew Nash is an audiologist who currently works as a government services territory account manager at Starkey Hearing, and is based out of Virginia Beach. He received his bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and his doctor of audiology degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He has worked in a variety of settings including a teaching university hospital, private practice, and for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He co-authored “Lack of Fractalkine Receptor on Macrophages Impairs Spontaneous Recovery of Ribbon Synapses of Ribbon Synapses After Moderate Noise Trauma in C57BL/6 Mice” published in Frontiers in Neuroscience in 2019. In 2023 he was appointed to the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing as an advisory board member. He is excited to join the SHAV team as interim Vice President of Audiology to advocate for audiology and increase audiologist interest in their state association!

Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC, BCS-S


Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC, BCS-S, serves as the Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Professor with James Madison University. Additionally, she is the acclaimed host of “First Bite: Fed, Fun, Functional” a weekly Speech Therapy Podcast that addresses “all thangs” Pediatric Speech Therapy, and is presented by SpeechTherapyPD.com. Michelle authored, "Chasing the Swallow: Truth, Science, and Hope for Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders". She is an accomplished lecturer; traveling across the nation delivering courses on best practices for the evaluation and treatment of the medically complex infant, toddlers, and children with respect to their pediatric oropharyngeal dysphagia, pediatric feeding disorder, as well as language acquisition within the framework of Early Intervention. She has served as the Treasurer for the Council of State Association Presidents (CSAP), is a Past President of the South Carolina Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (SCSHA), a graduate of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Leadership Development Program (ASHA LDP), a recipient of the Pediatric Feeding Disorder Awareness Champion from Feeding Matters, a recipient of the Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Outstanding Clinical Achievement from the SCSHA, a recipient of the State Clinical Achievement Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Foundation, recognized as an ASHA Innovator in 2023, and ten-time recipient of ASHA’s ACE Award for continuing education.

Vice President for Public Relations and Communication

Samantha Dudding, MS, CCC-SLP


As a dedicated professional in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Samantha has cultivated a robust leadership profile through a variety of roles and responsibilities. Her current position as Student Support Coordinator at Arlington

Public Schools exemplifies her commitment to leading Special Education initiatives,

where she coordinates and facilitate compliance meetings, manages a diverse team, and ensures that services meet federal and state regulations. This role has allowed her to effectively engage with

administrators, educators, and families to foster an inclusive learning environment.

In addition to my coordination efforts, she has served as a Clinical Educator at James

Madison University, where she directed the Scottish Rite Camp in Summer 2022. This

experience involved mentoring graduate clinicians, providing constructive feedback,

and guiding them through assessments and interventions, reinforcing her passion

for developing future leaders in our field.

Through her presentations and publications, such as her recent work on

neurodiversity and strengths-based assessment, she has sought to influence best practices and promote innovative approaches in speech-language pathology. Her participation in professional organizations, including SHAV's 2024 Leadership and Advocacy Academy, further underscores my commitment to leadership and advocacy within the profession. These experiences reflect her belief that effective

leadership in education and healthcare is rooted in collaboration, continuous

learning, and a dedication to enhancing the lives of individuals with communication

disorders.

Vice President for Professional Development

Emily N. Bromer, M.S., CCC-SLP

 

Emily earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and her Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Longwood University. She has been working as a school-based speech-language pathologist through contracts with Allied Instructional Services, and now as a direct hire with Appomattox County Public Schools (ACPS). She has experience working with students in preschool through 12th grade with various communication needs. She is a member of the interdisciplinary Assistive Technology (AT) team at Appomattox County Public Schools which strives to provide all students with access to and increased participation in their educational programming. Additionally, Emily works as an adjunct clinical educator at Longwood’s Speech, Hearing, and Learning Services (SHLS) clinic. She enjoys educating, supervising, and supporting future speech-language pathologists. When she is not working, volunteering with SHAV, or engaging in continuing education sessions, Emily loves to read books, host game nights with friends/family, and watch movies or reality TV shows with her husband, Tanner, and cat, Lucy.
